The Road - Cormac McCarthy's New Novel

After catching up on a lot of missed middle and high school reading the past couple years (everything from Orwell to Carson McCullers to Hemingway), my latest favorite author is Cormac McCarthy.

Amazon.com sent me a message today, since I have bought stuff there before, telling me that McCarthy's new book is available for pre-order. I was psyched. I just started reading McCarthy's books this year and I've read several, just finishing his latest novel, No Country for Old Men, a week or two ago. Now I hear from IMDB and another Web resource that the Coen brothers are making a movie of No Country for Old Men.

Anyway, it doesn't appear as The Road needs my publicity efforts; it's slated to be the Book of the Month Club's "selection of the month" for October. McCarthy is such an excellent writer, I look forward to my copy.

Sudbury River Clean Up

Cleaned up the Sudbury River near my house on September 9, 2006 with my brother Dan, and my friends and neighbors Judy and Jim. I initiated and helped organize it with the help of Judy and some of her connections in town. One of the connections, Michele, was able to get the DPW to come for free to a nearby open area and collect all the trash we hauled up from under the bridges by my house! There was a crew of volunteers working on the decking and boardwalk on the nearby nature trail. It was a beautiful day too.

Here's a picture of the junk we hauled up, piled and somewhat sorted at the end of the Old Danforth St Bridge:

The junk pile included:
  • 12 bicycles
  • 7 or 8 tires
  • 3 shopping carts
  • 3 traffic cones
  • 3 wheel rims
  • 2 scooters
  • 1 car door
  • 1 golf club
  • 1 reclining chair
  • 1 toy trumpet
  • 1 mailbox
  • sundry pipes, wires, bottles, wheels and other things

Roger Waters, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana

Rogers Waters concert a week ago Friday, 9/8. Amazing. Had good seats, sort of middle of the venue, Tweeter Center in Mansfield, MA. Best integrated visual show, rhetoric, music and live entertainment I've ever seen. Beats Blue Man Group, Grateful Dead, you name it. Great show.

Saw Jeff Beck open for Santana at Tweeter this Friday, 9/15. Got there a little late. Jeff Beck's set was too short. His encore of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on solo guitar with some backing keyboard ambience was excellent. Santana played a lot of his new stuff, kind of hanging out on stage behind his mustache and under his cap, playing it cool while other band members went crazy vamping and goofing to the stomping Latin beat.
